The Countdown
We worked on VBS this past week. It's hard to believe that there was a time when most churches did VBS for 2 weeks. We all have been counting down. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. My daughter who is over 7 months pregnant taught 13 children ages3-6. Thank God for those who helped her. I am the one who everyday told the story of Jonah in 5 installments to children in 4 classes. Our director has been preparing for this for a long time in spite of difficult family events she's been dealing with. Yes, only five days, five full days that have increased our understanding of Biblical truth and our love for the young ones God has sent our way. By the way most children no matter how well behaved they are, can be very exhausting.
Monday begins another countdown that in a way began months ago. Monday will be day 14 before my husband flies to Uganda without me. Important facts to remember - 1) God is sovereign 2) Just as God was with Jonah no matter what country he was in, so will He be with Steve no matter what country or what people he is with. 3) God is also with me as I stay home to be with my daughter during the last month of her pregnancy. I told my four year old granddaughter she will need to keep me company since I will be lonely without Poppop.
Six years ago Steve and I spent three weeks in Uganda. The key people he will be working with are ones we got to know on our previous trip. What an exciting thing for Steve to see how these people have grown as Christians and as leaders within the church. Although I don't regret staying home, I do remember fondly the challenge of preparing and teaching women in the churches, and the pleasure of getting to know people who are so like us and at the same time so different.
Please pray for me that I use my time well while Steve is gone. I need to be praying, reading, writing, cleaning, and organizing. All of this needs to be done around however I'm needed by my daughter Jessica and granddaughter Grace.
Pray for Steve as he makes his way down his list. Pray that his list would be as long as it needs to be and no longer. He will be teaching on three subjects while he is in Uganda: the life of Christ, marriage, and handling conflict. Pray that he is able to make the material challenging enough but not beyond their ability to handle well. Pray that he might avoid any cultural pitfalls while speaking like I did when I spoke to a group of women. I used an illustration of one woman being asked to prepare food for another man. I found out later that was a way someone might refer to having sex.
Pray for his safety traveling, and protection from malaria and other health hazards. Since our missionary is no longer at the station where Steve will be, it would be wonderful if a man from New Zealand who has been many times would be able to be there at the same time. Pray that Steve and I have some special time together before he leaves. Pray that he leaves fairly content with what he's been able to check off his list for the church here. I will keep you posted through this blog about what's happening.
