Another Update on Henry

Many prayed for our grandson Henry when he had brain surgery on April 19. Henry was diagnosed with hydrocephalis. His surgeon instead of placing a shunt in Henry's head opened a passage way for the spinal fluid to drain. Since there is a possibility that the passage way might close, Henry will need to be checked periodically. His last MRI was in August and his parents received a good report. Obviously we would like him to have a future of only good reports. Since everything has gone well since his brain surgery at 7 months of age many people think he is through with medical problems.

For quite a while Henry has been going to physical therapy. The hydrocepalis and the hospital experience have caused significant delays in his physical development. He just turned 1 year old. He does sit up but you can't be sure for how long. Recently his parents rejoiced that he can now hold his own bottle. He can easily roll almost anywhere he wants to go. When you hold Henry up he has not been putting any weight on his feet. His cousin was putting weight on her feet as early as 2 months of age. Recently when I was holding him I realized he ever so briefly was putting weight on his feet. Hitting those milestones no matter what the age or circumstances is still a thrill.

He has made good progress with the physical therapy. Henry has been measured for a special piece of clothing that will help him have better control of his body. The prognosis is that he will walk but much later than most children probably sometime after the age of 2. His mom has a problem with her back and it is hard to imagine her continuing to carry Henry as he adds more weight to his 22 pound frame. Pray for Jessica as she continues to carry him and for Henry as he continues to make progress.

We are so thankful that he seems to be a bright energetic boy who interacts well with others. He loves playing with his 5 year old sister Grace. She can make him laugh louder than anyone else. It seems like they have some inside jokes that only they get. Henry absolutely loves music. Especially if it is a favorite piece he moves his whole body, sometimes clapping his hands and or feet while shaking his head. He is developing a vocabulary. Henry's favorite all purpose word of the moment is "up" which he usually says repeatedly while pointing at the person talking to him. Of course 2 of the other words he says are Nana and Poppop.

We are very blessed to have 5 grandchildren we see regularly. Henry and his sister Grace are in our garage apartment. Matthew, 4 Jacob, 2 and Libby 5 months are 1 hour north of us.
